AB1 (California Healthy Children Insurance Program) Status page

Summary

This bill, introduced by Assemblyman Dymally, consolidates two programs for children's health care, Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Respectively, they are administered by the State Department of Health Care Services and county welfare agencies, and the Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board. The bill would streamline the application process with an eye towards getting more children enrolled in one program or the other. The program will be jointly managed by both boards and will glean information from the free lunch program.

Background

This bill would create the California Healthy Children Insurance
Program, which would consist of the portion of the Medi-Cal program
that provides health care coverage to children and the Healthy
Families Program. The bill would require that the California Healthy
Children Insurance Program be operated as a joint partnership by the
State Department of Health Care Services and the Managed Risk Medical
Insurance Board in a streamlined manner, with eligible children to
be enrolled in one program or the other, as appropriate.
